Research for writers and storytellers

Research for writers

I offer both general and specialised research services for writers and storytellers.

Please browse the following questions to find out how I can help you.

What kinds of research do you carry out?

Every project is different, but here’s a basic guide to what I can do for you:

Internet/desk-based research

This can be used for scoping searches, data gathering, fact checking and broad background research.

Further research

For more in-depth research, perhaps on a specialist subject, in addition to the internet I can access the following resources:

  • Local public and university libraries: for further exploration of academic subjects and books/journals in specialist areas, which would otherwise be off limits via the internet due to subscription/access restrictions
  • Specialist collections: for specific research needs within the following subject areas:
    • Nineteenth-century culture, history, literature and theology (Gladstone’s Library, Hawarden)
    • Science fiction studies (Science Fiction Foundation Collection, University of Liverpool)
    • Culture and history of Wales (National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth)

How does this work in practice?

Please email me in the first instance with a brief description of what you’re looking for.

If I can help you, we’ll then set up an initial scoping chat (via email or Skype) to:

  • home in on exactly what it is you’re looking for;
  • determine the best way to achieve this;
  • (if you are in agreement) set deadlines.

If, during the chat, you decide not to go ahead with the job, we will simply cancel proceedings and there will be no charge.

If we do proceed, I’ll get started within an agreed timeframe; I’ll provide feedback during the search to confirm next steps, if required (frequency and method of feedback will be agreed during the initial discussion); and, when I’ve completed the work, I’ll send you a report of my findings and/or recommendations for further research/action.

Do you have any specialisms?

I have particular experience in searching for biomedical information, having worked for a number of years in the NHS and medical communications industry. If you’re a sci-fi/fantasy writer with a biomedical plot on the go, you might just be my dream client! Please get in touch.

What are your qualifications and experience?

I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and 8+ years’ experience in a variety of library roles. All of these jobs have involved carrying out regular searches online, in print and in person, on a range of topics for many different clients. I have a further 8+ years’ experience in medical communications, where, in addition to providing editorial support, I have carried out literature searches and desk research.

What do you charge?

My basic hourly rate for general research is £25. This is exclusive of any additional expenses such as travel to specialist libraries. We will use the scoping chat to determine the likely length of time a particular search will require, and I will provide you with an estimated quote after this discussion; however, please note that this is only an estimate. You will need to confirm at this point whether you are happy for me to go over the estimated time if necessary, and by how much. If you have a non-negotiable budget, I will do what I can in the time available.

I am open to ongoing bookings for ‘ad hoc’ work totalling a specified number of hours, for a monthly fee. Please get in touch to discuss.

There is no obligation to proceed beyond the initial discussion if you aren’t happy, and you won’t be charged for the discussion itself. If you decide to proceed, and the search turns up paid-for references that might be useful, I will always ask you if you wish to pay the additional cost to obtain them.
