The Walking Dead vs William Shakespeare

8 April 201612 September 2025 GwynethBlog

Good writing is good writing, whatever the century. And, as we approach the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, it’s interesting to wonder what Will would be working on if he were alive today. As he had an eye for what was popular, I can’t help but think he’d be working in TV; in particular, I can picture him writing one of my […]

The latest episode of the Bookylicious #podcast is now out! In this episode, @jeorrett , @iwanberry and I share our choices for Halloween reads, including books by Sylvia Townsend Warner* and Francis Brett Young, plus a biography of Orson Welles. As always, the chat veers off into many other realms, ranging from Alderley Edge to Mythago Wood...

*My choice, pictured above. Impoverished middle-aged spinster moves to a small country village to escape her controlling family, and not only takes up witchcraft, but also experiences the cat distribution system in action!

You can go straight to the episode via the link in my bio.

A trip to @magickal.moments to stock up on incense, and now dipping into my latest Tarot deck purchase. 'After Tarot' by @loscarabeotarot features illustrations that imagine what might have happened seconds or minutes after the scenes depicted in the classic Rider-Waite-Smith deck.

Part of me struggles with this concept, as the point of a Tarot reading is to let the individual determine their own path forward, and to have a fixed outcome pictured on a card seems to deny this. That said, sometimes it can be difficult to see one's way, and to have a potential option presented could be helpful, even if only so the querent can sense a gut response to it: is this a desired outcome or not? And what could be done to turn the current in one's favour? Also, as the guidebook says, we are encouraged to see a reading/choice not as a static point in time, but as something more fluid, emerging from our past and leading us into our future.

This may end up being a deck I use to further my own study, rather than one to use with clients (when I finally resurrect this aspect of my business!), but it's in a very cute mini format, so I'm enjoying exploring it thus far 🙂

Lightbulb Moment. Digital collage, 2026.

I don't normally post more than once a day (if that), but I woke at 2.30 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep, so have been feeling only 'half present' ever since. But making art has perked me up, so I decided you could all enjoy (?!) the end results 🤪

Shared this yesterday, took it down as I wasn't sure I liked it, but on looking at it again I think I do?!

I Am She As You Are She As You Are Me And We Are All Together. (Digital collage, 2026.)

Absolutely no idea why I wanted to name it after I Am The Walrus. Perhaps following on from Monday's post about madness 🤣

Better weather than yesterday!

I relate to my environment in a really intense way, so weather patterns are always of interest. And tuning in to the cosmos is something that helps me manage the unpredictability of the human world.

We are all part of something greater than we know...

Not the best weather to restart my 'morning walk' practice, but now I'm finally living by the sea, it seems mad not to make the most of it. Or maybe some would say I'm mad to venture out there?

Mad. What does it even mean? What is madness, illusion, reality - for the individual and for society? And who gets to decide? The patriarchy? The medical profession? My imaginary friend? God? In these days of AI bots, 'alternative facts' and 'recollections may vary' - not to mention #MeToo - it feels like a relevant question, touching not least on issues of 'what does it mean to be human?' and 'how do we navigate our different experiences?'

So this afternoon I am settling down with Roy Porter's 'Madness: A Brief History' to explore this further. Porter's background is in the history of medicine, rather than in psychology, spirituality or the supernatural, but this compact volume touches on all these areas: from the times when socially unacceptable behaviour could be explained away as demonic possession, through the dark days of witch hunts, to the modern era with its medicalisation of mental health, profusion of diagnoses, and range of (often hotly debated) psychotherapeutic responses.

And I haven't even touched upon art. There's a lot to unpack.

My own personal threshold for (in)sanity was reached when I decided that, rather than stay out to get an even better picture of an even bigger wave, I would instead come home to get dry & warm and eat soup 🥣

A full day in London yesterday. I finally made it to the Richard Dadd exhibition 'Beyond Bedlam' @royalacademyarts , which was incredibly timely following my recent trip to see A Midsummer Night's Dream @chichesterft . Madness, dreams & illusion are themes I want to explore in the near future, and fairies (& fairy tales) may well make their presence felt too...

I then hotfooted it to #tatemodern for a fab conversation between @amyhale93 and @intron_depot about Amy's new book 'Magic: Beyond the Supernatural in Contemporary Art'. I came away with a copy of the book, and am looking forward to discovering many artists for whom magic is a potent feature of their practice.

I was also delighted to make the acquaintance of @stella.wisdom ! I love these random strokes of fate and look forward to meeting up again for @bl_publishing 's Tales of the Weird festival at Hallowe'en 🎃

Back to Chichester yesterday, this time to visit the British Landscapes exhibition @pallanthousegallery . Gradually filling the gaps in my art education - lots of artists to explore further... (Also: SHEEP!)

As it was such glorious weather we also managed a walk around the walls, and then finished things off with an excellent meal at The Ivy.

(There are some really bad photographs in here: wonky and plagued with reflections. Maybe this is why I have turned to collage 🤣)
